INSIDE BASEBALL: Two revenue sharing options don't appear lucrative

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - During Tuesday's Wilmington City Council meeting, members of the private development team known as Flywheel/Trask, which includes representatives from Mandalay Baseball and the Atlanta Braves, presented council members with the first proposal for funding a minor league baseball stadium.

According to rough estimates by the development team, the stadium would cost between $33.2 million and $35.7 million. For the sake of the following exercise, we will use a cost in between of $34 million.

The development team would be responsible for securing a 30-year loan to fund the stadium with the city sharing the costs. A 30-year loan on a $34 million stadium would come out to roughly $1.1 million dollars a year without interest payments.

Fixing a county office building won't come cheap

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Commissioners will be presented with four options to deal with the downtown County Office building at their next
meeting.

The building on 320 Chestnut Street has been closed for almost two years
because a water main break caused heavy damage to the building.

Commissioners will have a range of options from renovating
to demolishing to the inside of the building. None of the four options are cheap,
ranging from $10 million to almost $14 million.

The cheapest option would be to renovate six floors at an annual cost of
$701,000.

The most expensive option would be to demolish and fully rebuild all
seven floors of the building at a cost of $870,000 per year.

County commissioners will discuss their options Monday at 9:00 a.m.

What do Dolly Parton, Helen Keller and Harry Potter have in common?

What do Dolly Parton, Helen Keller and Harry Potter have in common?

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Thalian Association's next theatre season may have you thinking of Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John, Natalie Wood, Helen Keller, and Daniel Radcliffe (probably best known as Harry Potter). They all helped make the shows the community theatre group plans to perform next famous.

Thalian Association has announced its 2012-2013 season, and it's full of fan favorites.

The season opens on September 27 with the musical 9 to 5.  It's based on the movie starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and deals with female empowerment in the workplace. The musical features an original score by Dolly Parton.

In December, the group will perform Miracle on 34th Street, another musical based on a beloved film starring Maureen O'Hara and Natalie Wood. The musical is written by Meredith Wilson who also wrote The Music Man.

The next show opens at the end of January. It's the Wilmington premiere of Xanadu, which is inspired by the cult classic movie starring Olivia Newton-John. It follows a Greek muse who descends from Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach in 1980.

The Tony Award winner The Miracle Worker opens in March and follows the inspirational and emotional life of Helen Keller, who was deaf, blind and mute.

Thalian Association will end its season with How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying in May. Daniel Radcliffe recently starred in the Broadway revival of the show, which is a witty satire of corporate America.

All shows will be performed at Thalian Hall in downtown Wilmington. Season passes are available by clicking here.

Mayor expects more from private investors for baseball stadium

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington City Council's first look at a proposed plan to bring minor league baseball to the Port City has Mayor Bill Saffo wanting more than a commitment of one-third the cost to build a ballpark.

"I would have liked to see more from the private sector," said Saffo.

The initial proposal Tuesday night comes from the Flywheel Trask development team, with the support of the Atlanta Braves and Mandalay Baseball.

In an exclusive interview with WECT's Frances Weller, Rich Neumann of Mandalay Baseball said the Atlanta Braves and Mandalay would pay about a third of the cost of the proposed stadium.

The estimated cost is $33.2 - $35.7 million, excluding the costs associated with the land for the project. Neumann also revealed that the private development team has a preferred site, but cannot disclose the location.
