WPD used robot, negotiators to end standoff

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington Police know that diffusing dangerous situations is no easy feat. Thursday night, they were involved in a standoff at a home that began after a domestic assault sent a woman to the hospital.

Officers say James Hall, 66, was holed up inside the home. After five hours, they managed to bring Hall out using some methods that proved to be beneficial.

"Our goal is a peaceful resolution to any situation we respond to," said Lt. David Yanacek with the WPD Crisis Negotiation Team.

Yanacek says the team tried to contact the suspect inside the house by using a public address system on the SWAT team vehicle.

At Thursday night's scene, WECT reporters could hear negotiators saying repeatedly that they wanted to help the man.

Race to the Ballot tour ends in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The anti-Amendment One campaign Race to the Ballot wrapped up its five-week tour across North Carolina in Wilmington Friday.

The Race to the Ballot Finale Rally began at 5:15 p.m. at the Riverfront Park on Water Street and ended with a viewing party at TreBenzios.

Amendment One defines marriage between a man and a woman. Voters in North Carolina will be able to weigh in on this proposed amendment during the Primary elections May 8.

If passed, the amendment would prevent all domestic unions, other than marriage between a man and a woman.

Race to the Ballot is a voter registration and education campaign of the Coalition to Protect All NC Families. They are coming together in effort to defeat the proposed Amendment to the NC Constitution.

Video: Reading to students at Forest Hills, College Park Elementary

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – I had the pleasure of reading to students at Forest Hills Elementary School and College Park Elementary School in Wilmington for Read Across America Week.

I read to Mrs. Payne's third graders and Mrs. Cooke's second graders at Forest Hills. I also spent time with Mrs. Smith's second grade, Mrs. Marek's fourth graders (in the video helping me with "Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day") and Mrs. Christ's third grade at College Park.

Thanks boys and girls for a great day!

Wildcats move on to Regional Final

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WECT) - For the second time in as many years the New Hanover Wildcats are headed to the class 4A state final.

Thomas Johnson's layup with eight seconds remaining in regulation lifted New Hanover (28-1) past Raleigh Millbrook 42-40.

"I didn't want to go home," Johnson said. "I want us to go as far as we can. I want to go to Raleigh."

Johnson's 16 points led New Hanover which owned a 12-point fourth-quarter lead. Five-straight turnovers to close the game pulled Millbrook even at 40 with 21 seconds in regulation.

On the final play of the game, a double-team on Daquan Barnes left Johnson all alone underneath the hoop for the winning shot.

"It's a group that's been there," Kirk Angel said. "I tell these guys everyday don't let this be your last practice, don't let this be your last game."

Ty Walker dismissed from Wake Forest basketball team

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WECT) – Roughly a week after playing his final home game at Wake Forest, Wilmington's Ty Walker will never play another with the program.

The former Mr. Basketball in the state of North Carolina has been suspended for the rest of the season for violating athletic department policy, according to the associate athletic director at Wake Forest.

Walker is expected to graduate with a degree in communications in May.

"Unfortunately it has become necessary to suspend Ty Walker for the conclusion of the season," said Bzdelik. "He will finish up classes this semester and is on target to graduate in May."

Walker played in 20 games with 13 starts for the Demon Deacons in 2011-12. He averaged 4.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.

Read Across America taking place in local classrooms

Read Across America taking place in local classrooms

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Students across the Wilmington area are taking a break from the norm to visit with local people willing to read them a story.

It's part of Read Across America, which is also Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Local firefighters, politicians, actors, athletes, parents and journalists took part in the event. They all read a book to kids and encouraged them to continue reading and writing.

The Junior League of Wilmington organized Read Across America at Sunset Park Elementary. League members gave each classroom a Shel Silverstein book to read at a later time. The kids made Dr. Seuss hats and ate cake donated by Front Street Brewery. Classrooms all across the area had other special guests and plans.

The national movement is to encourage students to continue reading throughout their lives. Research has shown that kids who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
