Business owners discuss ideas for a riverfront park

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Business owners in downtown Wilmington are discussing ideas for a Riverfront Park in the Port City.

Water Street is already a popular location for events like the Farmer's Market and the summer Downtown Sundown concerts.

Now, the plan is to make the waterfront more of a destination for both tourists and locals. Some people believe adding more trees and green areas along the river would help.

A public meeting is being held about the park Thursday night at City Hall.

CFPUA members discuss possible effects of baseball, convention center

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - With several new developments like a possible baseball stadium and hotel in downtown Wilmington, local officials want to make sure they have the right infrastructure in place to supply sewer systems and water, which are already taxed.

Thursday, members of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority spent the day discussing related projects at their annual Capital Project Funding meeting.

However, despite CFPUA members saying that they've made some financial ground, the authority is still more than $25 million in debt.

At the meeting, members prioritized which projects they need to repair and how those projects will be funded, and much of the focus remained on downtown Wilmington.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – CFPUA crews closed off the intersection of Second and Orange streets around 3:15 p.m. Thursday in order to repair a water main break.

Drivers are advised to choose an alternate route around this area while crews isolate and repair a section of the water main.

Lawsuit: Dudley Mansion owners sue neighbors

Lawsuit: Dudley Mansion owners sue neighbors

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The owners of the Dudley Mansion in downtown Wilmington are suing their next door neighbors.

According to court documents, Ron and Cynthia Picket are suing Phoebe Bragg for a number of reasons, including slander and libel.

The Dudley Mansion came into light in July 2010 after a judge’s court order gave the okay to weddings already scheduled at the location.  Neighbors complained of trash and loud music.

The city claimed running paid events in a neighborhood is a violation of city ordinances.

The bell tower can hold up to 43 bells and the church hopes 39 more will be donated as memorials to loved ones.

Mel Brooks' musical is over-the-top fun

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Over the top, sarcastic, and just overall fun. That's what you can expect from a musical written by comedian Mel Brooks and performed by Opera House Theatre Company.

The Producers was adapted from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name.  It follows Max Bialystock, a struggling Broadway producer.

"He makes nothing but terrible, terrible plays," said actor Anthony Lawson.

Leo Bloom, his accountant, stumbles upon something Max can't resist.

"He discovers that technically you can make more money producing a flop than you could with a hit," said Lawson.
