Berger feels 'ambushed' after NHC commissioners vote to keep him off of committees

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in New Hanover County unofficially voted during their agenda brief meeting Thursday afternoon to remove Brian Berger from committees he is currently on.

They also want to prevent Berger from joining any new committees he is interested in the future.

The unofficial vote was four in favor of the motion, one against – Berger being the one against.

Berger says he did not expect the move, which he labeled "an ambush" by other members of the board. Thursday night, Berger lashed out at his fellow board members, accusing them of breaking the law.

"I suspect that most or at least some of the other board members have
violated the reasonable ethical standards that are in place for an
elected official," said Berger. "And [they] very well may have broken
the law…I would say probably all of them."

Chamber of Commerce breakfast honors leaders, talks about future of DC Virgo

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - At Thursday's Wilmington Chamber of Commerce breakfast, the focus was supposed to be on those involved in a project to start the DC Virgo charter school, and on those who were receiving the Business Achievement Award Recipients.

But that was overshadowed by yesterday's announcement that the state had rejected the plan.

The announcement came as a shock to people involved, including the school board and the Blue Ribbon Commission.

Chairman of the Board Donald S. Hayes said this is not the end.

"This goal of ours has been such an undertaking, and it will still move forward. It doesn't dampen our spirits one bit, I'm kind of surprised, but we have to keep moving forward."

Hayes said the reasons that the charter school was turned down can be corrected, and it was just a matter of not naming specific people to certain positions.
