City, county leaders to discuss growth, finances at Thursday meeting

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington City Council and New Hanover County Commissioners are scheduled to meet Thursday morning to discuss a variety of issues, according to a press release from a county spokesperson.

Leaders present will talk about growth and finances in the Oleander Room at the Executive Development Center, which is off of Military Cutoff Road and next to the Northeast Branch of the NHC Public Library.

Don't be a victim of contractor fraud

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud (NCPHIF) will hold a “SmartPower” workshop on “Protecting Yourself from Home Repair Contractor Fraud and Scams.” 

The workshop will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the David M. Paynter Assembly Room, Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Road, Wilmington, NC 28405,  10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.   The workshop is free and open to the public.

The NCPHIF is holding the workshop because they get lost of phone calls from homeowners who have been scammed. These workshops are held all over the country including Joplin, Missouri and Birmingham, Alabama where major tornadoes ripped houses apart. 

 During the workshop attendees will learn how to recognikze typical scams, how to find and check out a contractor, whay you will want included in your contract and much more.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10. Here are some items of interest from the agenda:

  • Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees candidate (interview is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. at the Board of Education Center, located at 1805 S. 13th Street)
  • 2012-13 budget: 1.2% salary increase for all employees, two CTE teachers and an employee/community relations coordinator position, $150,000 increase in maintenance contracted services, $24,000 increase in technology maintenance contract for media system upgrade, $50,000 reduction in textbooks funding and $375,000 one-time $15 per student technology allotment
  • Surplus property
  • Contracts for bread, dairy and low-fat ice cream products and beverage vending at New Hanover High

Local American Red Cross honors exceptional service recipients

Local American Red Cross honors exceptional service recipients

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross held its 103rd annual meeting and awards ceremony on Thursday night in Wilmington.

More than 40 community members attended the event, which was held at the City Club at de Rosset, according to a news release.

The following attendees were honored for exceptional service, the release said:

  • Service to Armed Forces Award-Rosa Rivera
  • Blood Services Award-Joe Boccia and Sofonda Edwards
  • Disaster Services Award-The Diaz Family
  • Health & Safety Support Award-John Bellamy, Jim Dugan, Lindsey Gaines, Casey Lewis and Mike Seigh
  • Employee Excellence Award-Wendy Flynn & Autum Mihm
  • Volunteer Leadership Award-James “Wilson” Spaulding

New CFCC president search narrowed to six finalists

New CFCC president search narrowed to six finalists

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The search for a new president at Cape Fear Community College is down to six finalists.

The CFCC Presidential Search Committee met Thursday afternoon to pick the six finalists in a closed session. The group plans to notify the finalists before releasing their names in late July or early August.

Interviews should begin in mid-August. Each of the candidates will participate in an on-campus question and answer forum and an interview with the board of trustees.

After nearly two decades as the school’s president, Dr. Eric McKeithan will retire soon. "The gratification for me is seeing graduates getting good jobs and moving on to four-year universities to change their lives," McKeithan said in a news release recently.

His final day at CFCC is Friday.

Dozens of women hope to turn their lives around

Dozens of women hope to turn their lives around

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dozens gathered in the Thalian Hall ballroom Thursday for the first U-turn Power Luncheon for Women.

U-turn is a new program created by the Wilmington Police Department to help steer youth and adults with less than favorable pasts in the right direction. Wilmington Police Recreation also supports this initiative.

Lynn Burke, an inspiring young woman who was sentenced to 10 years in prison, was the keynote speaker at the luncheon. After being released from prison, Burke finished law school and is now a member of the Washington, DC Bar Association. She is waiting for admittance to the North Carolina Bar.

Dozens of young women from the community who are working earnestly to make dramatic U-turns in their lives attended the luncheon, in addition to more than 50 professional women.

Event for troubled young women in community scheduled

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An event aimed at steering troubled young women in the right direction is scheduled to be held Thursday afternoon, according to a press release from a spokesperson for the Wilmington police Department.

The first ever U-Turn Power Luncheon for Women will be held at Thalian Hall from noon to 1:30 p.m.

More than 50 professional women and 50 women from the community working to change their lives are expected to be present.

Lynn Burke, a woman who was sentenced to 10 years in prison, will serve as the keynote speaker. After completing her sentence, Burke attended law school and is currently a member of the Washington, DC Bar Association, awaiting admittance to the NC Bar.

The U-turn initiative was developed by the Wilmington Police Department. In May, a similar luncheon was held for troubled men in the community.
