NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An informational meeting Tuesday night will provide an opportunity to learn more about a new project involving a local Superfund site.

Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency will be at the New Hanover County Library in Downtown Wilmington from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. They will talk about the Horton Iron & Metal Site, which is located off Highway 421.

The 42 acre site is on the National Priorities List, which names the hazardous waste sites around the country that are eligible for extensive, long term cleanup.

A metal recycling facility employing 18 people is currently operating on the site, according to the EPA’s community information fact sheet. A gate restricts access to the site to prevent any exposure to workers, while a silt fence catches any contaminated soils, stopping their spread.

The agency’s Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study begin February 2013. It includes numerous samples of the air, land, and water to test the extent of contamination.
