Woman in the hospital after beer bottle assault

Two women were taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after an argument that escalated into one woman having a beer bottle broken on her face.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Two women were taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after an argument that escalated into one woman having a beer bottle broken on her face.

According to someone from the Wilmington Police Department, the assault happened around 4:25 a.m. in the Creekwood community. Police said two women were at a memorial service earlier in the evening. The two later got into an argument.

That's when one of the women tried to walk away from the argument. Police said the other woman then allegedly hit the other with a beer bottle. Police said the beer bottle broke and cut the woman's face.  Both women were taken to the hospital.

The suspect, Shirley Hines, was released from the hospital into police custody around 6 a.m. She's being charged with assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting serious injury.

Man taken to hospital after being shot in foot

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man who was shot in the foot Wednesday afternoon has been taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, according to authorities.

New Hanover County dispatch officials say police responded to a call in the 1000 block of Emory Street around 3 p.m.

A Wilmington Police Officer said the person who was shot was then located and taken to the hospital.

There is currently no word on the victim's condition or a suspect.

Man sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug charges

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man who pleaded guilty to drug charges in January was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Earlier this year, 37-year-old Andrew Roland of Wilmington pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and distribution of a quantity of heroin, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice.

In October 2011, Wilmington Police made three undercover heroin purchases from Roland.

Mr. Biscuit, 2 other pets saved in early morning house fire

Fire officials gave the dog oxygen because it was not breathing very well when they rescued it.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Fire officials say an unattended candle caused a house fire in the 1000 block of Hanover Street in Wilmington around 2:15 Thursday morning.

When our crews arrived on the scene shortly after, fire officials had the fire under control.

According to fire officials, one adult and two children were home at the time of the fire. They were able to get out of the home before fire officials arrived on the scene.

Fire officials also rescued three animals from the home – a dog, a kitten and a guinea pig. Fire officials gave the dog oxygen because it was not breathing very well when they rescued it. All three animals survived and are doing well.

WPD investigates early morning shooting

According to the Wilmington Police Department, one man was shot three times on South Eighth Street overnight.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department responded to the area of Eighth and Meares Streets in reference to gunfire just after 1 a.m. Thursday morning, according to WPD.

Officers say a 22-year-old was located in the 900 block of S. Eighth Street and was transported to NHRMC with gunshot wounds to his forearm, groin, and lower leg.

The victim stated that he was walking from a bar when two males came out of the bushes.

Police say the first suspect was described as 17 to 19 years old, 5' 5" to 5' 6", short dreads, dark skin, thin build, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect was described as 17 to 19 years old, 5' 10" to 5' 11", light skin, and wearing a white t-shirt.

The suspect in the black sweatshirt yelled "give me your money" and then each displayed a handgun of an unknown make, model, or color, according to police.

Man walking down the street shot in the arm: doesn't know who did it

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police are investigating after a man was shot in the arm in Wilmington Monday evening.

According to Lt. Blanton with the Wilmington Police Department, it happened around 9:20 p.m. at 10th and Queen Streets.  EMS and authorities arrived on scene shortly after. 

Blanton said a 59-year-old man was walking down the street when someone opened fire on him.

He was shot in the arm. Blanton said the man had no idea who shot him. Police currently do not have any suspects.

Law enforcement makes several arrests in drug operation

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Detectives with ACE and the Criminal Conspiracy Unit wrapped up a month long investigation in the area of 11th and Orange Streets.

According to police, the operation stemmed from several citizen complaints in the area about drugs.

Authorities were able to gather enough evidence during the investigation to secure warrants on several people for selling narcotics in the area.

Police arrested and charged the following:

  • 3 counts of possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine
  • 3 counts sell/deliver cocaine
  • 3 counts possession with intent to sell/deliver controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school
  • possession of drug paraphernalia
  • driving during revocation
