WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man was issued a citation around 1:49 a.m. Friday after allegedly jumping into the Cape Fear River and swimming across to the USS North Carolina Battleship, according to a spokesperson with the Wilmington Police Department.
The SABLE helicopter was called to respond, along with the fire department.
A New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the battleship and located the suspect, 21-year-old Matthew John Miller, a US Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC.
The citation he was issued was given because swimming in the Cape Fear River violates Wilmington City Code.
