WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Several officers with the Wilmington Police Department were recognized at the Wilmington City Council meeting Tuesday evening.
Here are details of the presentations, provided by WPD spokesperson Lucy Crockett:
Medal of Valor
Officer Fred Clark, Corporal Robert Perozzi, Officer Frank Childers and Officer Adam Lewis were each presented with the Medal of Valor as a result of bravery and placing their own lives at risk. These officers responded to a domestic disturbance on February 3, 2012 in the 500 block of Maides Avenue involving a suspect with weapons. The officers arrived and observed the man with a knife and then shortly later a handgun. The suspect grabbed the female victim on the front porch and placed the gun to her head. When a struggle began, Officer Clark was able to approach the man and disarm, subdue, and apprehend him with the assistance of Officer Childers, Corporal Perrozzi and Officer Lewis.
Certificate of Merit
Sergeant Brian Needham, Officer Daniel Roehrig, and Officer Heather Newton were each presented with the Certificate of Merit for bravery displayed in assisting with the domestic disturbance that occurred on February 3, 2012 in the 500 block of Maides Avenue.
Life Saving Award
Corporal Andrew Korwatch was presented with the Life Saving Award for assisting a woman who jumped into the Cape Fear River on April 20, 2012. Officer Robert Gilbert was presented with the Life Saving Award for assisting a second woman who jumped into the Cape Fear River on April 20, 2012, trying to assist her friend. Former NHC Sheriff’s Sergeant Aaron Morrissette will be acknowledged for assisting Officer Gilbert.
