Teens confess to stealing woman's purse

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Two teenagers confessed to stealing a woman’s purse in downtown Wilmington on Thursday.

Wilmington Police Patrol units were dispatched to the corner of South Third and Orange streets around 10 p.m., according to WPD spokesperson Kevin Smith. Deputies in the bicycle unit of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, who were already in the area, assisted the WPD units set up a perimeter and called in the K-9 unit for a track.

While the K-9 track was being conducted, Smith said, a resident in the area ran outside and told New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies that two young men were in her backyard attempting to enter her residence. After a short on-foot pursuit, the subjects were apprehended and confessed to the crimes.

Sean Ray McMahan, 17, was charged with common law robbery, attempted common law robbery, and hindering, delaying or obstructing a law enforcement officer. Markyes Deshaun Jones, 18, was charged with common law robbery, felony conspiracy to commit common law robbery, and hindering, delaying or obstructing a law enforcement officer. Both teenagers were at the New Hanover County Jail under a $100,000 bond at the time of this post.

The victim’s stolen purse was located.
