Shooting victim undergoes surgery, recovering

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a shooting that happened around lunchtime Thursday.

According to Lucy Crockett with the WPD, Matthew Dale Lewis, 35, of Hampstead, was shot in the area of Eighth and Dawson Streets. Lewis then drove himself to Sixth and Mears Streets, where an ambulance picked him up to took him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Detective Allsbrook said the victim appears to have been shot in the backside area. He underwent surgery at the hospital and is recovering. His condition is unknown at this time.

It is unclear what led to the shooting. Officers are working on some leads but are staying tight lipped about the investigation.
