WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department arrested two men Monday who are accused of stealing a car.

According to Detective Kevin Smith with the WPD, officers spotted two men driving a Ford Focus that had been reported stolen a few days ago in the 600 block of Swann Street just before noon Monday.

Smith said one of the men, Jaqun Orlando Copeland, started running towards the Cape Fear River and threatened to jump in the water when he was cornered by officers behind PPD. The WFD Fire Boat and WPD officers on a Wilmington River Taxi boat were able to talk the man out of jumping into the river.

Copeland surrendered and was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, and three felony counts of probation violation.

The other man in the stolen vehicle, Justin Marcel Covington, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on felony charges.
