Suspect facing firearm charges after being stopped on bicycle

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A convicted felon was apprehended Monday night after Wilmington Police found him to in possession of a stolen firearm.

According to authorities, 42-year-old Antonio Lavone Newsome was traveling along Princess Place Drive around 9:49 p.m. when a police supervisor saw him riding a bicycle without a light. Newsome resembled a suspect from a separate incident, and the supervisor proceeded to stop Newsome.

Before conducting a frisk, the supervisor asked Newsome if he had any weapons on him, and Newsome said that he did – a 9mm Glock handgun concealed on his hip.

The serial number on the gun showed that it had been reported stolen out of Onslow County.

Newsome was subsequently charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

He remains in custody under a $50,000 bond.
