Multiple acid bombs found in Wilmington street

Hazardous materials were found Tuesday night in the 600 block of South 10th Street.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hazardous materials were found Tuesday night in the 600 block of South 10th Street.

Police responded to shot spotter at 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found multiple acid bombs which had already exploded except for one.  There was no damage from the explosion.

Authorities said the bombs were "very weak" and made from soda bottles.  Police are still trying to figure out what's inside.

Police called the bomb squad and have rendered them safe.

They also found other bombs on 13th and Queen.  Bomb squad currently has those bombs and are currently taking photographs and performing tests.

No one has been arrested. The scene is still under investigation, but an evacuation is over.

Man arrested for DWI tries to kick out patrol vehicle window

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man arrested for DWI Friday night tried to kick out the back window of a patrol vehicle while being taken into custody.

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department responded to a report of a hit and run in the 600 block of Mears Street Friday night around 10:15 and found the vehicle involved in the 900 block of South Seventh Street. According to police, Justin Hunter Stroupe, 23, was in the vehicle and very impaired.

Police say Stroupe refused to get out of the vehicle and was "combative" until he was subdued and handcuffed by officers.

According to officials, Stroupe tried to kick out the back window of the officer's patrol vehicle, so he was further restrained.

Stroupe was still resistant and was taken to the hospital for medical clearance and a blood test before being booked in jail. He was charged with hit and run, DWI and hinder and delay.

No one injured in early morning electrical fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Fire crews were called out to an electrical fire in the 2800 block of Morgan Street just before 1:00 Wednesday morning.

Witnesses on the scene said they could see flames coming from the home at one point.

According to Captain Tracy Garner, four people live in the home.

The fire, which started in the attic, was ruled as an accidental electrical short circuit.

The occupants of the home are being relocated by the American Red Cross.

No injuries have been reported.

Police looking for suspects in two early morning robberies

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police are looking for the suspects in connection to two early morning robberies.

The first robbery happened at the Murphy USA gas station at 5221 Sigmon Road in Wilmington just before 1 a.m.  According to Lt. Blanton from the Wilmington Police Department, the suspect approached the cashier like he was going to buy something and reached in his pocket and showed what appeared to be a weapon.

Police say the man, wearing all black clothing then fled to the Walmart parking lot and later stripped off his clothing, which officers later found near the scene of the robbery. Officers responded with a K9 unit and were not able to track down the suspect.

The second unrelated robbery happened in the 1100 block of Rankin Street. According to Lt. Blanton, a woman was getting her mail when two people, one male and one female, approached her.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Kids often see and recognize police as something bad on TV or movies, but Thursday, the Wilmington Police Department opened its doors to kids.

The WPD welcomed local students for Demo Day, where students had the chance meet some of the officers and their four-legged partners.

They also got to check out some of the tools of the trade used in their job.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington man was one of several suspects charged during a March 15 “Booze It and Lose It” checkpoint on Hwy. 74/76 West at the Brunswick River Bridge, according to a spokesperson for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrick Deon Davis, 28, was arrested for DWI, then found to be wanted in New Hanover County for failing to appear on charges of manufacturing marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana; maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Davis was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Facility, and was placed under a $50,000 bond.

US Marshals find wanted man in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - US Marshals arrested a man in Wilmington, which led to a second arrest by local police.

Devante Quashawn Bloodworth, 20, was wanted for possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin and selling heroin within 1,000 feet of a school, according to a release from WPD.

On Friday, The US Marshal's Task Force tracked down Bloodworth to a residence on Greendale Drive. They found narcotics inside, allowing the Wilmington Police Department to ask for a search warrant, according to the release. Because of this, Shatavia Olivia Thomas, 19, was arrested. She faces several charges including trafficking heroin, other drug-related offenses, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Both Bloodworth and Thomas are in custody at the  New Hanover County detention facility. Bloodworth is being held under $120,100 bond, and Thomas's bond is $50,000.
