WPD locates missing man with Alzheimer’s, dementia

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department helped locate a missing elderly man in the early morning hours Friday.

According to a WPD spokesperson, an officer was dispatched to the 410 block of Campbell Street in reference to a missing 75-year-old who has Alzheimer’s and dementia around 4:35.

Another officer soon showed up and met with the victim’s daughter, who said that her father had been missing for about an hour.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A total of 2,164 traffic and criminal violations were made recently in New Hanover County, 109 of which were DWI-related.

A news release from an NC Department of Transportation spokesperson revealed that, across the state, 3,147 motorists were cited for driving while impaired during a holiday “Booze It & Lose It” campaign that ran from Dec. 7 to Jan. 2.

Additionally, 110,692 traffic and criminal citations, 6,381 safety belt and 1,134 child passenger safety violations, 364 speeding violations and 3,543 drug charges were issued statewide.

Man arrested in StarNews parking lot

Police officers made an arrest in the parking lot of StarNews Tuesday night for a reported hit and run.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police officers made an arrest in the parking lot of StarNews Tuesday night for a reported hit and run.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, a call went out from the 911 center around 10:30 p.m. in reference to a possible hit and run involving a 2003 black Ford Crown Victoria.

Officers stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of StarNews and arrested 32-year-old Damiel Christopher Devane.

Devane was charged with:

  • driving while license revoked
  • speeding in excess of 15mph
  • expired registration
  • operating a vehicle without insurance
  • reckless driving with wanton disregard for the safety of others
  • hit and run

Man busted gathering items to steal

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man was busted for breaking and entering when a  neighbor told police he heard strange noises coming from the house next door.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to a home on Mayfield Court around 12:30 Saturday morning.

Officers spotted 34-year-old William Lewis, of Alder Ridge Road in Wilmington, inside the home gathering items to steal.

Lewis was charged with possession of burglary tools, damage to real property and second degree burglary.

Man charged in connection to breaking and entering

Man charged in connection to breaking and entering

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man faces charges after a breaking and entering, according to officials with the Wilmington Police Department.

Monday night, officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering in process in the 590 block of Sharease Circle.

A neighbor called police to notify them that man was trying to get into a nearby house, but was also ringing her own doorbell.

UPDATE: Police identify man shot in chest, says he's in stable condition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a shooting that happened shortly before midnight Thursday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a shooting in the Willow Pond Apartment complex in Wilmington.

Police say Karem Demond Thomas, 28, was shot twice in the chest and once in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Police are looking for 3 black males, driving either a black Chevrolet Impala or gray Ford Taurus.

911: 'These guys came in at gun point, robbed us and taped us up'

One man is dead after an overnight shooting and home invasion in Wilmington.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a fatal home invasion that happened early Monday morning.

Authorities say the woman told police she and her boyfriend were asleep in their home in the 600 block of North Eighth Street. That's when they were awoken to someone breaking into the house through the back door. The victim told the police two men tied them up and ransacked the home.

The woman told police she heard a gunshot and was able to escape across the street and call 911.

"These guys came in here at gun point and robbed us and taped us up and put duct tape over our eyes," the victim told 911 operators.

The victim told 911 that the man she was with had been shot in the front, but was unsure exactly where. Police said Clifton Sykes, Jr., 40, died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
