Woodworkers help wounded warriors walk tall | Arts & Culture

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Members of the Wilmington Area Woodturners Association (WAWA) have used their skills to help some wounded warriors.

The group wanted to give back to the community, so it took on a special project to make custom canes for the Wounded Warriors organization.

WAWA members made 93 canes and presented them to the Fort Bragg Wounded Warrior battalion on Friday, June 15. The Fort Bragg battalion is the second largest Wounded Warrior battalion in the United States, with more than 600 soldiers at any given time.

Each cane was sized to each soldier and cut to length. They all have a rubber tip and a brass name plate that says Wilmington Area Woodturners Association.

WAWA also provides demonstrations in several arts and crafts venues and hands-on training to area schools. The group works with local Boy Scouts to help them earn a woodworking merit badge.

WAWA was founded in 2004.
