Downtown Wilm. businesses can cover 50% of windows with signs

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Council members in Wilmington made a final decision during their meeting Tuesday night on the ongoing sign ordinance debate.

City leaders decided to move forward with an ordinance that allows businesses in downtown Wilmington to have 50 percent of their store front windows covered. Anything attached to the window is considered to be a sign.

Businesses are expected to help "police" each other to make sure the rule is upheld.

Mayor Bill Saffo said the goal is to keep the windows looking clean, not cluttered, in order to keep the area beautiful. If the signs become an issue, council could take another vote on this decision.

Several business leaders say they use window signs as a way of promoting other businesses to keep the area thriving.
