Talks of reopening former WASTEC facility resurface

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It appears that talks of reopening the former WASTEC facility are not dead after all.

At their last meeting, New Hanover County Commissioners voted 3-2 to not enter into an agreement with Covanta, who was proposing to take over the facility.

County staff has negotiated new provisions in the contract with Covanta and will present those changes to commissioners on Monday.

At their last meeting, several commissioners questioned if the new facility would make enough money from tipping fees, or if county tax payers would have to pay even make up the difference.

The new contract has provisions which they say safeguard the county in the event of any legal disputes surround the flow of trash to the facility.

No final decision will be made on Monday, and commissioners expect the topic to come up again in their November meeting.
