NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The graduation rate in New Hanover County rose past 80 percent in the 2011-12 school year. According to the school district, this is the highest percentage the county has seen.

A spokesperson for the school district also said proficiencies in both the End of Course and End of Grade tests increased in the last school year.

“I give a great deal of credit to our teachers and principals, who – despite the financial difficulties of the last four years – did a great job in preparing our students for success,” said NHCS Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley.

For grades 3-8, proficiency in reading remained nearly constant at 77.4 percent and math proficiency slightly increased to 87.7 percent.

All but six schools in New Hanover County saw growth in proficiency over the past school year.
