NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Halloween may be over, but the recycling process is an ongoing event, and officials at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher are encouraging local residents and students to help by collecting used candy wrappers to recycle.

According to a news release from an aquarium spokesperson, folks and students from classes around New Hanover and Brunswick counties are invited to participate with the wrapper recycling.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, but any participating class with the most candy wrappers by weight to the aquarium Dec. 1 will win a free outreach program with a live animal presentation.

The aquarium will weigh the collected wrappers, sort them by recycling viability and send the wrappers to recycling partners that create products like park benches, purses and backpacks.

The partnership between the aquarium and recycling partner also raises money for conservation efforts at the aquarium.

You can drop off wrappers at the aquarium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and staff members will try to weigh the wrappers at the time of the drop off. If you’re dropping off the wrappers as part of a class to win the contest, an email will be sent to the class’ teacher documenting the weight.
