Deputies investigate claims of student having gun, no weapon found

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office are investigating reports of a child showing a gun at a school bus stop Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office said they located the student accused of having a gun and no weapon was found.

The school bus was heading to Mary Mosley Learning Center, which went on lockdown for about 20 minutes Wednesday morning as a precautionary measure. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

WECT and Fox Wilmington are teaming up with the Wilmington Police Department to take this issue head-on.

We’re co-hosting a public screening of the documentary Bully, free of charge at Thalian Hall April 18. The showing starts at 7:00 p.m.

While the event is free, you will need to get a ticket so we know how many people to expect.

You can pick up a ticket at the TV station, located at 322 Shipyard Boulevard, the Thalian Hall Box Office, or the Wilmington Police Department.

Simple as ABC: A Bee Champion!

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A champion has been crowned in the first ever New Hanover County Spelling Bee.

Renee Segda, of Murray Middle School, won first place after several final rounds of back and forth spelling.

Twenty-six students represented 13 public and private schools in the county-wide event at New Hanover County's Board of Education Center.

Spellers moved on to the "challenge words" after five perfect rounds of the pre-released category. The never-before-seen words lived up to their "challenge" namesake as student after student heard the "ding" from the judges' bell.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Finding fun for family and friends shouldn't be too much of a challenge as the Azalea Festival activity options are far and wide-- offering a little bit of everything.

The Cole Bros. Big Top Circus is a popular Azalea event year after year. This time around you can expect to see acrobats, clowns, tigers, elephants and even a woman who swings from her hair. Also, who can turn down checking out the camels motorcycle maniacs, trapeze artists and the of course the human cannonball.

The two hour event is considered to be the world's largest circus show under the big top and if you'd like to attend here are some details.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A friendly competition on the court brought out some of the best and brightest young men from our community.

The Brigade Boys and Girls Club took on the Community Boys and Girls Club Wednesday night in the Third Annual Police Athletic League Crosstown Championship All-Star game.

For the first time, the Brigade team beat the Community team.

When asked before the game why the Brigade team would come out on top, Zamar Brown said, "Our chemistry, all of us are real good friends with eachother."

The students who took to the court haven't just wowed their coaches with their moves on the court, they also excelled in the classroom.

Chief Ralph Evangelous handed out special awards at the end of the game.
