Officials meet to discuss overcrowding at local elementary school

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County School Board leaders are talking about a plan to deal with overcrowding at Wrightsville Beach Elementary School at a meeting Tuesday night.

One plan under consideration would reassign students within the Airlie Road area from Wrightsville to Bradley Creek Elementary School and place mobile classroom units at Bradley Creek.

Wrightsville Beach Elementary has 348 students although the building is only supposed to hold 130.

In September 2012, the Board of Education approved spending money to install mobile classroom units at Wrightsville Beach Elementary. The students who will occupy the mobile units are currently being taught at Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church. They can only stay at the church for one year, due to Wrightsville Beach town code.

DC Virgo Preparatory Academy moving in better direction in first year

DC Virgo Middle School closed in May of 2011.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A school that was once considered to be struggling seems to be in the midst of a transformation.

At a meeting Tuesday night, board members got an update on DC Virgo Preparatory Academy, which was closed in 2011 due to budget cuts, but opened up this school year with a new plan to better support students.

95% of the students who go to the school are on free or reduced lunch and in recent years the school's students have not performed well on End Of Grade (EOG) tests.

Principal Eric Irizarry said the school is now moving in a better direction. He talked about new programs in place at the school to engage and educate its students.

Right now, it is only open to 6th grade students.

Irizarry told the board that the new, longer school day has proved to be successful. Students attend school until 4:30, an hour longer than other middle schools in the district.
