WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A 60-year-old man from Wilmington, who police believe to be in danger, is missing.

Melvin Jerome Bennett was last seen on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the K&D Mini Mart on S. Kerr Avenue around 10:30 p.m., according to Wilmington Police Department spokesperson Lucy Crockett. He is legally blind and walks using a white cane.

Crockett said Bennett usually wears dark glasses and his family is worried about his safety.

WPD investigators searched the wooded area near where Bennett was last seen several times after he was reported missing. On Tuesday, the WPD and Brunswick Search and Rescue, using specially trained dogs, searched the area again. The SABLE helicopter crew also conducted an aerial search.

"We have to be realistic about the circumstances at hand," said Detective Lee Odham, with the WPD. "He has been gone for two weeks tomorrow, he is a 60-year-old legally blind person."

Anyone with information about Bennett's whereabouts should call 911 or the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600.
