WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Authorities with the Wilmington Police Department seized a Mercedes after the driver tried to get away from officers.
According to Cpl. Kevin Smith with the police department, an officer spotted the Mercedes going 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on Market Street and initiated his lights and sirens to pull over the vehicle.
Shawn Lamont Morant, 37, was driving the Mercedes and took off towards 21st Street and then on Wolcott Street, accelerating the entire time.
Smith said Morant finally pulled over at Wolcott and 20th Streets.
The officer could smell marijuana coming from the Mercedes when he approached the vehicle. According to Smith, the officer searched the vehicle and found marijuana and heroin drug paraphernalia in addition to several empty beer bottles.
Morant and his passenger, Aeisha Milton, were both arrested.
Morant was charged with reckless driving to endanger, speeding, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/distribute marijuana, felony speeding to elude arrest with aggravating factors, driving with a revoked license, and was cited for open container after consumption.
According to Smith, due to the flee and elude charge and Morant's criminal history, the Mercedes was seized.
Milton was arrested and charged with possession with intent to manufacture/sell/distribute marijuana.
