NHRMC adds security after stabbing incident, victim in good condition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police arrested a man early Thursday morning accused of a stabbing at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Wednesday night.

According to officials, Josef Randolph stabbed the mother of his child around 10:30 Wednesday night.

Police say Randolph, a former hospital employee, went to the 8th floor of the hospital where the mother of his 4-month-old child was visiting her mother. That's when authorities say Randolph stabbed the mother of his child in the neck while she was holding her baby.

Hospital officials said the victim is in good condition.

Thursday night, hospital officials said added security measures including the following are in place:

'Operation Slow Down' yields more than 13,500 citations statewide

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than 13,500 drivers across North Carolina were recently cited for speeding during the Highway Patrol's Operation Slow Down campaign. The campaign was done in combination with the Governor's Highway Safety Program No Need to Speed effort.

According to officials, speeding is the leading cause of traffic accidents and fatalities throughout the state and across the country.

Highway Patrol investigated 1,801 fatal accidents in North Carolina in 2012. Of those, 245 deaths were contributed to speed, compared to 244 in 2011, according to the NC Highway Patrol.

Despite the end of the Operation Slow Down campaign, troopers will continue to aggressively enforce the speed limits in North Carolina.

"Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of the motoring public," said Bill Grey, commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

2012 fire on Wayne Drive was set, WPD looks for answers

WILMINGTON, NC - (WECT) - New details on a fire that happened almost one year ago. The Wilmington Police Department now believes a fire that broke out in the 100 block of Wayne Drive was set.

At this point, they say it looks as if the fire was set on purpose but they are still looking at every possible explanation.

Police are asking for anyone with information to give them a call at 910-343-3600. They are hoping that a tip, will lead them to an explanation on the fire's cause.

"Whenever we get to a point in the case where its looking like it's going to stall out, we've tracked down every possible lead we can and none of them have developed into anything we can use we tend to try to expand the investigation and reach out and ask for the publics help," explained Detective Kevin Smith.

The fire took place on May 25, 2012 at 103 Wayne Drive. The owner was asleep at the time and was able to get out without getting hurt.

Police looking for suspects in two early morning robberies

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police are looking for the suspects in connection to two early morning robberies.

The first robbery happened at the Murphy USA gas station at 5221 Sigmon Road in Wilmington just before 1 a.m.  According to Lt. Blanton from the Wilmington Police Department, the suspect approached the cashier like he was going to buy something and reached in his pocket and showed what appeared to be a weapon.

Police say the man, wearing all black clothing then fled to the Walmart parking lot and later stripped off his clothing, which officers later found near the scene of the robbery. Officers responded with a K9 unit and were not able to track down the suspect.

The second unrelated robbery happened in the 1100 block of Rankin Street. According to Lt. Blanton, a woman was getting her mail when two people, one male and one female, approached her.

Remembering Rahman: WPD homicide investigation

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Authorities with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a homicide that took place very early Thursday morning.

It is the first murder of 2013 inside Wilmington city limits.

Rahman Liadi, 25, was killed in a shooting near the 1600 building the Houston Moore public housing community. Police say the shot spotter system picked up the gunfire around 12:15 a.m.

A resident said his fiancé heard gunshots and woke him up. He went outside worried it was his son, who had not come home from work yet.

The man said he saw Liadi on the ground alive and asked him if he was okay. The man said Liadi looked at him and witnesses flagged down an officer.

Security cameras are equipped on the buildings at Houston Moore. Wilmington police reviewed anything they may have captured, according to Wilmington Housing Authority CEO Michael Krause.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington man was one of several suspects charged during a March 15 “Booze It and Lose It” checkpoint on Hwy. 74/76 West at the Brunswick River Bridge, according to a spokesperson for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Patrick Deon Davis, 28, was arrested for DWI, then found to be wanted in New Hanover County for failing to appear on charges of manufacturing marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana; maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Davis was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Facility, and was placed under a $50,000 bond.

US Marshals find wanted man in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - US Marshals arrested a man in Wilmington, which led to a second arrest by local police.

Devante Quashawn Bloodworth, 20, was wanted for possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin and selling heroin within 1,000 feet of a school, according to a release from WPD.

On Friday, The US Marshal's Task Force tracked down Bloodworth to a residence on Greendale Drive. They found narcotics inside, allowing the Wilmington Police Department to ask for a search warrant, according to the release. Because of this, Shatavia Olivia Thomas, 19, was arrested. She faces several charges including trafficking heroin, other drug-related offenses, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Both Bloodworth and Thomas are in custody at the  New Hanover County detention facility. Bloodworth is being held under $120,100 bond, and Thomas's bond is $50,000.
