Police responding to robbery in Wilmington

Police in Wilmington are on the scene of a reported robbery at 8th and Castle Street according to New Hanover County Dispatch.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a reported robbery at Eighth and Castle Streets early Thursday morning, according to officials with New Hanover County Dispatch.

Dispatch officials said the call came in just before 1 a.m.

No other details are known at this time.

WILMINGTON - Cape Fear Community College is taking significant steps to provide a greater level of safety for students, employees and visitors.

Next month, the college will hire an independent security consultant to review the overall safety of each campus location in New Hanover and Pender counties. This comprehensive study will include an assessment of college facilities, the surrounding environment, current college safety procedures and potential security risks. The results of this study will be used to create a campus-wide security plan which will help to create the safest college environment possible for all students and employees. The results of the study will also be used to guide the operation of a newly-approved CFCC Campus Police Department.

More than 100 cited for DWIs in NHC during "Booze It & Lose It" campaign

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A total of 2,164 traffic and criminal violations were made recently in New Hanover County, 109 of which were DWI-related.

A news release from an NC Department of Transportation spokesperson revealed that, across the state, 3,147 motorists were cited for driving while impaired during a holiday “Booze It & Lose It” campaign that ran from Dec. 7 to Jan. 2.

Additionally, 110,692 traffic and criminal citations, 6,381 safety belt and 1,134 child passenger safety violations, 364 speeding violations and 3,543 drug charges were issued statewide.

Man arrested in StarNews parking lot

Police officers made an arrest in the parking lot of StarNews Tuesday night for a reported hit and run.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police officers made an arrest in the parking lot of StarNews Tuesday night for a reported hit and run.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, a call went out from the 911 center around 10:30 p.m. in reference to a possible hit and run involving a 2003 black Ford Crown Victoria.

Officers stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of StarNews and arrested 32-year-old Damiel Christopher Devane.

Devane was charged with:

  • driving while license revoked
  • speeding in excess of 15mph
  • expired registration
  • operating a vehicle without insurance
  • reckless driving with wanton disregard for the safety of others
  • hit and run

Engineer hopes new church will bring new life to neighborhood

The historic Fifth Avenue Baptist Church that once stood at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bladen Street has been torn down to make way for construction of a new church.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A local engineer is giving new life to an old church that will hopefully move one neighborhood into a positive direction.

Tony Leon Harris Jr. was found shot to death on a front porch along North Fifth Avenue in 2011. The case remains unsolved.

While there's been little headway in his murder investigation, the neighborhood is moving away from violence.

The historic Fifth Avenue Baptist Church that once stood at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bladen Street has been torn down to make way for construction of a new church.

Engineer Ronald Sparks was hired for the project and has already begun rebuilding the church from the ground up. The more than 3,000 square foot facility will not only help bring back members of the congregation, but also put people in the area back to work.

CHARGED: Police stop man in possession of burglary tools

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An officer with the Wilmington Police Department spotted a man riding a bicycle with no light on Dock Street just after midnight Saturday.

According to police, the man hid behind a parked Jeep and dropped a large item, which was later discovered to be a Ryobi chop saw. When an officer tried to get up with him, the man fled north on the bicycle across Market street.

The officer eventually took the man in custody and found a pry bar and cutters in his possession.

Police charged 54-year-old Nathaniel Bellamy with possession of burglary tools, hinder & delay, and an outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear.

Man arrested for heroin after smell of marijuana seeps from vehicle

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department approached two people sitting in a vehicle around 7:15 Friday night in the Jervay neighborhood.

James Curtis Davis Jr., 34, was arrested for possession of heroin after officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers found seven bindles of heroin on Davis during a frisk.

Davis was charged with possession of heroin.
