Civil rights documentary to air in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A civil rights documentary is showing in Wilmington for one night only.

Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith, who works in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at UNCW, is helping host a screening of Free Angela and All Political Prisoners at Carmike Cinemas.

It's about Angela Davis, a University of California philosophy professor, who became a civil rights activist icon in the late 1960's.

The movie starts at 7:00p.m. on Thursday, May 16, and there will be a discussion on civil rights afterwards.

NASCAR legend Junior Johnson speaks at CFCC luncheon

NASCAR legend and Hall of Fame Inductee Junior Johnson was at Cape Fear Community College Thursday morning to speak at the annual Gift of Education luncheon.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – NASCAR legend and Hall of Fame Inductee Junior Johnson was at Cape Fear Community College Thursday morning to speak at the annual Gift of Education luncheon.

Johnson's message was simple - it takes money to make a difference for students who struggle to balance the demands of work, school and family.

Hundreds of people attended the event which raises money for student scholarships through the CFCC Foundation.

According to the college, the CFCC Foundation exists solely to support the students, faculty, academic programs and mission of the College.

Over 30,000 students take courses at CFCC each year, and 2/3 of them require financial assistance.

Trinity Children Foundation continues its support for Cape Fear Community College with donation

Wilmington, N.C. – The Trinity Children Foundation recently presented a check for more than $8400 to Cape Fear Community College to continue funding the Trinity Children Foundation’s Donna Morse Scholarship.

The scholarship is open to any Cape Fear Community College student who has suffered abuse and has been helped by any of the agencies supported by the Trinity Children Foundation. 

The funds for the scholarship were raised through the Trinity Children 3rdAnnual Golf Invitational event held at River Landing Resort in Wallace, NC in August, 2012.

Three New Hanover County Schools students have been awarded the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The scholars were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.  National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Duke Energy donates $15,000 to Cape Fear Community College for student scholarships

Wilmington, NC- Duke Energy recently donated $15,000 to Cape Fear Community College for students enrolled in technical and vocational programs.  Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need to students enrolled in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Technology, Industrial Systems Technology and Computer Engineering Technology.

John K. Elliott, Director of East Region Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy, presented the check to Dr. Ted D. Spring, President of Cape Fear Community College, and then spoke to a group of students at CFCC’s North Campus about their futures and opportunities at Duke Energy. “This grant represents an investment in this region and in the energy future of our state,” Elliott said. "These students are doing all the heavy lifting and putting all the long hours in, juggling family and school.  We're glad to help."

Smart Start gets grants to help fund scholarships

Smart Start gets grants to help fund scholarships

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Smart Start of New Hanover County recently received a $21,770 grant to help educate teachers and mentors.

The grant comes from the PNC Foundation for the Stacking Up the Stars: Early Childhood Professional Development Project.  It will give the folks at Smart Start the opportunity to provide community college scholarships through the CFCC Foundation to five early childhood education teachers. The teachers have to work at a childhood center where children get subsidies.

The grant also gives Smart Start the opportunity for more training on its PUZZLES Center staff for infants and toddlers.
