Cost of Miller-Motte College nearly double UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Did you know that a year at Miller-Motte Technical College costs the average student almost twice as much as a year at UNCW?

That's the most surprising statistic we found when researching local colleges on College Scorecard. It's part of the whitehouse.gov website, with information put together by the US Department of Education to help students compare the cost of higher education.

We asked Miller-Motte why their institution cost so much more than local 4 year colleges. For starters – a spokesman said UNCW is a public school that gets public assistance to help them keep their costs down. Miller-Motte is private.

In general - we also know that providing hands-on technical training to students is more expensive than traditional classroom instruction out of a text book.

Still - the bottom line matters. Students at Miller-Motte are taking out substantial student loans to cover tuition.

The ground floor of McLeod building has a serious mold and mildew problem. Some employees from the building have been moved to temporary mobile units.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - During Monday's Board of Commissioners meeting, the Board unanimously agreed to spend over $600,000 to help CFCC fix their mold problem in one of the buildings on campus.

The ground floor of McLeod building has a serious mold and mildew problem. Some employees from the building have been moved to temporary mobile units.

David Hardin, CFCC spokesperson, said the building is still safe for students and classes since the mold problem is contained to the bottom floor.

However, repairs are needed immediately to prevent the problem from getting worse.

"It's a major building," said Hardin. "It's on the ground floor so it's important we can get this problem fixed correctly and don't put a band-aid on it. We want it fixed the right way. It affects the air handling for the entire building so we need a new air conditioning unit."
