WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officials from Riverfest gave the CFCC Marine Technology program a check Monday morning for student scholarships.

The scholarship funds will go towards helping students afford tuition and fees to attend the marine tech program. According to CFCC, the program is the state's only two-year program that offers students hands-on offshore experience for jobs in the maritime industry.

CFCC said graduates find work in a variety of industries that include offshore petroleum exploration, maintaining waterways and inlets for shipping and commercial fishing, beach re-nourishment efforts, and monitoring the overall health of our coastal environment.

Last week, the NC governor's budget proposed cutting half the funds needed to run the marine tech program.

Veterans write and share their war stories at CFCC

Veterans tell their stories on the campus of CFCC.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – From war to the written word, veterans are sharing their stories at Cape Fear Community College.

It's part of a program called "StoryForce."

The six-week writing seminar for students encouraged military veterans to write about their experience serving their country and returning home from war.

At an event at the college Wednesday night, the veterans read what they wrote to their peers.

Those who took part in the program found it to be therapeutic.

Kenny Smalls told us, "One day a doctor said, ‘Kenny, you know the best thing for you to do is put your story in writing and let other people read it.' And ever since I started doing that I felt better, I'm able to be more alive, be a better human and this is just a great opportunity."

CFCC's English department sponsored the program.
