Recycling up 12% in areas with new bins, city leaders say

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Almost 7,000 new blue recycling carts are in the hands of Wilmingtonians, according to a news release sent out by the city of Wilmington Monday.

Another 10,000 need to make their way to their new home as the city rolls out an updated recycling effort.

The city says the effort to pick up recyclables bi-weekly with a larger cart has helped to spur interest in the recycling effort as well.  The city has received requests from up to 600 new customers for the voluntary program. In the downtown area, where carts are already delivered, recycling is up 12% according to the release.

While the new program won't officially take effect until January 7th, folks with carts are encouraged to start using them now.

If you're interested in picking up a cart, call 341-7875 to get on the waiting list. You might have to wait until Christmas time to get it though.
