Carolina Farmin' promotes healthy living

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Carolina Farmin’ off Market Street in Wilmington held an event Wednesday to promote healthy living.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., experts were on hand to answer questions and provide free screenings. Participants could get a free vision check, get their blood pressure checked, talk to fitness experts, learn more about healthy diet planning and more.

Seniors showed off their skills near the end of the event with a “Moving Seniors Fitness Demostration.”

The event was sponsored by WellCare Home Health.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' floating movie set to dock in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A floating movie set that was used in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be docked in Wilmington and available for tours this weekend.

The tall ship HMS Bounty will arrive at Wilmington’s downtown Riverfront Park, near the corner of North Water and Princess streets, on Thursday, May 17 at 9 a.m., according to the Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust. The Wilmington Fire Department’s fireboat Atlantic VI is expected to meet the ship at the Memorial Bridge and escort it to the dock.

The HMS Bounty will be open to the public for tours from Friday through Sunday, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. daily. The tours will cost $10 for adults, $5 for children over 7, and will be free for children 7 and under. Souvenirs will be available for purchase.

The 180-foot long replica of the famous 18th century ship was built in the early 1960s as a movie set for Mutiny on the Bounty, featuring Marlon Brando. It has also been used for filming in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Golf, comedy fundraisers to be held for memorial honoring firefighters

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A golf tournament and comedy show will soon be held in honor of fallen firefighters in Wilmington and those lost on 9/11, according to a press release from a spokesperson on behalf of the Wilmington Fire Department Memorial.

For the first time ever, members of the Wilmington Fire Department will team up with local businesses to host the HomeTown Heroes Golf Classic.

The golf classic will have a firefighter or “hometown hero” in each group of four. Individual teams of five will compete in a captain’s choice tournament for prizes.

The golf tournament will be held Monday, May 21 at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, and sponsors will also receive tickets to the Marion Karr Comedy Show.

Wilmington Family YMCA hosts OrthoWilmington 5K race

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Family YMCA will host its annual OrthoWilmington 5K race this upcoming Saturday, May 19 at 8 a.m. The race is an initiative presented by the Wilmington Family YMCA to benefit the Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE Program.

Event planners are expecting approximately 1,300 runners, 650 of which will be GOTR and STRIDE participants. All GOTR and STRIDE participants will receive medals at end of race. They will also receive official certificates for completing the program.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley will join a panel of local middle school principals live on The Learning Network next week.

According to a news release, the NHCS-TV Studio phone lines will be open from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 for viewer questions for Markley and the following guests:

  • Dr. Sherry Pinto, principal of Holly Shelter Middle School
  • Patrick McCarty, principal of Murray Middle School
  • Robin Meiers, principal of Myrtle Grove Middle School
  • Wade Smith, principal of Noble Middle School
  • William Hatch, principal of Roland-Grise Middle School

Parents of students will have the opportunity to discuss the new core curriculum, tests, dress codes and renovations.

(WECT) - Mothers across the country will be honored by their children Sunday for Mother's Day.

While many will spend the day with their family celebrating, not everyone will be so lucky.

Some soldiers in Afghanistan recorded special Mother's Day greetings to remind the important women in their lives how much they're loved.
