Startling statistics about HIV/AIDS

NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - New Hanover County is one of the top in the state when it comes to highest number of people living with HIV, so health officials are encouraging everyone to participate in National HIV Testing Day on June 27.

New Hanover County also ranks 20th in the state for reported AIDS cases.

In the United States, more than one million people are estimated to be living with HIV infection.  About one in five of those is unaware of their infection. Early detection is the key to taking full advantage of early treatment.

The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care.

As part of National HIV Testing Day, local health workers will provide free HIV screenings at the Northside Peace Rally at Portia Hines Park at 10th and Rankin Streets in Wilmington from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

For more information, call (910) 798-6778. The Health Department's clinic also provides free HIV testing. Call (910) 798-6500 to make an appointment.
