WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Event organizers for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure are requesting that the City of Wilmington waive the fee for use of a parking lot during their 5k race in March.
Organizers want to use the 2nd street parking lot as the finishing line on Friday, March 1 through the 2. Normally, if a group wants to use the lot exclusively they would have to pay $7 a day for each of the 114 spaces for at total of $1,596.
According to a memo from the City Manager, normally the city would not donate parking spaces for non-city events. If the city decides not to donate the space organizers say they will have to explore other alternatives to fit their needs.
The Komen Foundation is estimating that the event will draw 2,500 people in its first year.
