UNCW holds 20th annual culture festival

UNCW - (WECT) - The University of North Carolina - Wilmington, hosted the 20th annual Intercultural Week. The festivities included food, dances, musical performances, and exhibits inspired by cultures from around the world.

The week culminated in a festival that took place on Saturday.

"People every year look forward to Intercultural Week," said Jennifer Fernandiz-Villa, an organizer. "They especially look forward to today's festival, when community and campus folks come out and share all the different cultures."

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC(WECT) - Volunteers with the Murray Middle School PTA are organizing a dinner theater and silent auction on April 4, but they need help from the New Hanover County community -- specifically, local businesses.

The dinner thater and auction will be a unique event that includes a catered dinner, performance, a dessert social and silent auction.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It may only be February, but high school graduation ceremonies are quickly approaching.

Tuesday, New Hanover County Schools announced the following graduation dates and times for 2013:

Good Shepherd Center donates 400 food and 400 non-food boxes

The Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington provided 400 food and 400 non-food boxes to families who are in need in the community.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington provided 400 food and 400 non-food boxes to families who are in need in the community Thursday. This donation is part of the center's Feed the Children effort.

According to a press release, families received tickets throughout the week to participate in this event. More than 400 people with families are expected to pick up their boxes around 2:00 Thursday afternoon.

"Good Shepherd is honored to partner with Feed the Children in order to expand our mission of feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and fostering transition to housing" said Katrina Knight, Executive Director. "No family in this community should ever go hungry, and we are thrilled to help ensure that parents are able to provide food to their children."

NHC kindergarten registration starts in Feb.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Registration for New Hanover County schools will begin next month, according to a news release from a school system spokesperson.

Registration and enrollment forms will be accepted from Feb. 4-22.

There are 25 area elementary schools in the school district, along with three magnet schools and two year-round elementary schools.

Local non-profits help ring in the New Year with a day of service

Local non-profits help ring in the New Year with a day of service

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - LINC(Leading Into New Communities), FoodCorps, Feast Down East, VISTA, and Corporation for Public and Community Service have come together to host a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event for Monday, Jan. 21 . This event will take place at LINC farm located at 222 Division Drive near the airport from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 According to the press release, the day will be spent clearing and preparing this future urban farm for spring planting. Community volunteers, students, and corps members will pitch in for this event.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer.  After volunteers finish their farm duties, a celebration meal will be prepared by senior corps volunteers from the Wilmington area.

Cape Fear Model Railroad Society to host 16th annual Model Railroad Show

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Come out for The Cape Fear Model Railroad Society's 16th annual Model Railroad Show and Sale!

This event will take place January 26th and 27th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4pm. on Sunday at the American Legion Post 10 building on Pine Grove Dr.

According to the press release, this event has been selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s top 20 events for January and February.

This show will feature free modeling clinics presented by Tom Staley from Tom’s Train Station in Cary, N.C.  Everyone who attends has a chance to win door prizes and raffles for train sets.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under get in for free!
