Enjoy family fun for free each month

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Residents in New Hanover County can cash in on free family fun the first Sunday of each month.

Residents are invited to visit Airlie Gardens, the Cape Fear Museum and the New Hanover County Arboretum free of charge.

Airlie Gardens is 67-acres of quintessential Southern gardens with access to Bradley Creek and 10-acres of freshwater lakes. The county purchased the garden in 1999. Airlie is open on Sundays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Cape Fear Museum is located on Market Street in historic downtown Wilmington. The museum collects, preserves, and interprets objects relating to the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. Sunday hours of operations are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The New Hanover County Arboretum, located on Oleander Drive, is a special seven-acres in the county where homeowners can see the variety of plants that grow in the area. They are open on Sundays from sunup to sundown.

SAFETY TIPS: Holiday fire prevention

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – With the holiday season here, many people like to display decorations, such as Christmas trees and candles, and spend lots of time cooking in the kitchen.

But statistics from the National Fire Protection Agency show that  U.S. fire departments respond to 230 home structure fires each year that are caused by Christmas trees, and almost half of all home decoration fires are sparked by candles, according to a news release from the Wilmington Fire Department.

Additionally, unattended cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and home fire injuries.

As a result, the WFD released the following fire prevention safety tips:

CFCC's Holiday Helpers to brighten season for local children

WILMINGTON - This holiday season, hundreds of local children will have a brighter holiday season, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, individuals and the Cape Fear Community College Foundation.

Over 150 community donors recently gave over $14,000 to help more than 140 CFCC student families through the Holiday Helpers program.

Established by CFCC Foundation board member Betsy Leonard in 2005, Holiday Helpers was started to support CFCC students with children who are struggling financially during the holidays.

“The focus of the program is to ensure that the children of hard-working students would be able to experience the joy of knowing Santa Claus remembered them on Christmas morning,” said Leonard.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – With the recent events in Connecticut, communities around the country and world are trying to honor the victims and Wilmington is no different.

You may have already heard of The Olivia Act, which was created and named after one of the children killed in Newtown.

A photographer, who wishes to be anonymous, came up with the idea.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Get into the Christmas spirit Thursday and Friday by checking out a mini Winter Wonderland at the YMCA off of Market Street.

It will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and children in attendance will also get the chance to meet some of Santa’s elves.

Santa uses ambulances to deliver gifts

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Paramedics at New Hanover Regional Medical Center loaded their “sleighs” Friday to deliver gifts as part of the annual Adopt-A-Family Toy Delivery.

Each employees with the hospital donate hundreds of items to deliver to families that might not otherwise have gifts to unwrap at Christmas.

More than 80 hospital departments are taking part this year and have adopted 84 families in the community.

The toys were loaded into ambulances for delivery Friday morning to area agencies.

NHC makes top 10 list for healthiest counties

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released its 2012 health rankings for North Carolina and the results are looking good for New Hanover County.

New Hanover County weighed into the number 10 spot for the state.

The report is based on several factors, including lifespan, exercise habits, medical access and similar factors. 

Wake, Mecklenburg and Durham counties were all among the top 10.
