WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington man assaulted his baby’s mother then took off with the couple’s child before being apprehended two hours later, according to Wilmington Police spokesperson Kevin A. Smith.

The victim told officers that her baby’s father, David Antonio Rivers, assaulted her during an argument in the 1600 block of South Fifth Street. She said Rivers, 20, “roughly grabbed their baby and ran out the back door.”

While on the run, a neighbor reported that Rivers ran into her home, uninvited, and right back out through the back door.

Approximately two hours after officers arrived, Rivers and the baby were found. The baby was returned safely to the mother and Rivers was taken into custody.

He was charged with two counts of assault on a female, communicating threats, misdemeanor child abuse, and breaking and entering. He was also served with five outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court. Rivers was being held without bond at the New Hanover County Jail at the time of this post.
