Send more than just letters with your mail carrier

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Mail carriers in Wilmington and across the country need your help to put an end to hunger.

They will participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 11.  Postal workers will deliver the mail and collect food on their routes.

The public is asked to place bags filled with non-perishable food items next to their mailbox.  A mail carrier will collect the donation and take it back to their postal branch.

Volunteers from the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina will be at the branches throughout the day to unload the trucks.

Local donations will benefit the food bank in Wilmington located on Marstellar Street which serves four counties.

Hot dogs could go cold if owner doesn't follow code

The owner of Haley's Hot Dog Cart is boiling mad because he says the city forced him to close down.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One business owner in Wilmington has a beef with the city over a hot dog stand.  The owner of Haley's Hot Dog Cart is boiling mad because he says the city forced him to close down.

In order to operate a food truck or a food cart in Wilmington, business owners must first receive a permit from the city.  Although Haley's Hot Dogs operates on private property, the city says their business doesn't cut the mustard.

Lazaro Carillo has been serving up hot dogs downtown for the past six years.  He's been operating on private property in front of Charley Brownz Nightclub on Front Street.  But six months ago, he decided to move to a new location, half a block away, in front of Finklesteins at the corner of Front and Market Streets.

City officials say Carillo's business is disturbing the public right of way.  John Fullerton works in the city's zoning department.
