Free mammograms at NHRMC hit record number

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Pink Ribbon Fund of New Hanover Regional Medical Center recently provided a record number of mammograms for women who can't afford them.

On average, about 70 people, women and men, come in for the free diagnostic screening. In April, 120 vouchers were given out.

The free mammograms are made possible through monies raised from Pink Ribbon fundraisers, including the annual Pink Ribbon dinner held every October.

The Pink Ribbon Project also provides comfort bags to women and men undergoing cancer treatment.

Recipients of the free mammograms do have to provide proof they are in need of assistance. They are also required to have a doctor's order.

Iris Baker is the director of the voucher program. She says the vouchers are easy to get.

Wilmington VA Health Care Center finally open to veterans

Senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr were at the opening celebration of the expansion at the Wilmington VA Health Care Center.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It's been a long time coming, but veterans can now receive an array of health care services in Wilmington.

Senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr were at the opening celebration of the expansion at the Wilmington VA Health Care Center. The clinic is located at 1705 Gardner Drive, next to the Wilmington International Airport.

The expansion will allow veterans more options for health services, including day surgery, mental health, cardiology, women's health, MRIs, mammograms, and cat scans.

Adding these services means many veterans will no longer have to drive to the medical center in Fayetteville for care.

"These courageous men and women will now have increased access to the high-quality health care and diverse services they deserve," said Hagan in a news release when plans for the project were secured.

The project was originally announced in November 2009, but hit a few snags along the way.

Hundreds of people lined up to get free dental work in Downtown Wilmington.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of people lined up Friday for the chance to fix dental issues that might be nearly impossible to fix otherwise. Some, even waiting years to address the issue due to financial problems.

The North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM) portable free dental program is an outreach program of the North Carolina Dental Society, and it is at CFCC's Schwartz Center Friday and Saturday.

Dental services include fillings, extractions, dental cleanings, and a limited number of front-tooth partial dentures.

Currently, NCMOM has enough equipment to set up an 80 chair full dental clinic including digital x-ray, sterilization, and all instrumentation and supplies. Clinics are generally set up with 20 to 80 chairs and services are provided for 300 to 1000 patients over a period of two days.

New group helping with end-of-life decisions

A new non-profit group is trying to help make a difficult decision a little easier.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new non-profit group is trying to help make a difficult decision a little easier.

The Living Well Coalition recently started its work in southeastern North Carolina.

The goal is to help educate citizens about the completion of advance directives, which are legal documents that tell your doctor and your family your wishes about your health care if you are unable to tell them.

"Really, it's the only thing guaranteed in life is death," said Jarrett Nykamp, the Regional Coalition Leader of the Living Well Coalition. "So, why not go ahead and make these decisions and relieve the burden from your loved ones?"

The group is holding some upcoming events to help people complete their advance directives free of charge:

April 16: Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 3-6:30 p.m.

April 17: St Andrews AME Zion Church, 5-7 p.m.
