WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Water Quality crews with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will begin their comprehensive drinking water system flushing exercises Monday, according to a press release.
CFPUA said water main flushing is a routine operation that results in a clean and well maintained drinking water system.
According to a press release, water is forced through pipes at high velocity and systematically flushed out of fire hydrants to remove mineral sediment until the water is clear.
It is possible that customers may experience periods of low pressure and possible discoloration while flushing is taking place in their area. Therefore, it’s recommended that customers refrain from washing clothes and minimize water use while flushing is being conducted in their zone.
Customers that do experience discoloration are advised to run the cold water for approximately 3 to 5 minutes to allow the lines to clear.
Water flushing will begin Monday at 9:00 p.m. for residents and businesses that fall in the 1A section of the map. Flushing will occur Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
