Safely dispose of unwanted medications this month

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you’re looking to get rid of dated or unwanted medication, drop it off at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Medical Mall later this month.

NHRMC, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, CFCC, Safe Kids NC, Cape Fear Clinic and Cape Fear Coalition for a Drug Free Tomorrow is holding a Medication Disposal Event Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We are very pleased to host this event for the community,” says Kathy Rawlings, RN case manager and nurse educator for the Outpatient Pharmacy at NHRMC.  “Since we began holding these events, we have collected thousands of pieces of unneeded medications and kept them from becoming hazards to our community and our environment.”

Having unnecessary medications in the home can be dangerous. Old medications could be confused with current medications; children could be poisoned by them; and pets could be harmed if they ingest medications dropped and not picked up.

Komen Race for the Cure no competition for Pink Ribbon Project

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Organizers of Wilmington's first Susan G. Komen for the Cure are setting the record straight on any concerns it competes with one of the area's largest breast cancer fundraisers.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation expanded its national fundraising efforts to Wilmington about a year ago.  This past weekend, over 2400 people participated in the inaugural 'race for the cure' in downtown Wilmington.

The event raised over $253,000.

Leigh Johnson, Regional Development Manager for the Susan G. Komen Foundation says while Komen is the largest and best-funded breast cancer organization in the United States, it does not compete for dollars with the Pink Ribbon Project.

Medical experts recognized for diabetes care

Medical experts recognized for diabetes care

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some local health care workers are getting praise for their work with patients who have diabetes.

The Diabetes Recognition Program has recognized providers with New Hanover Medical Group and Morgan Internal Medicine which are both part of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Physician Group.

To receive recognition, providers submitted data to prove their work in the program's key measures of diabetes care. Those include eye exams, blood pressure tests, nutrition therapy and patient satisfaction.

The recognition is valid for three years.

“For a person with diabetes, the right clinician can make the difference between living with diabetes, as opposed to suffering from diabetes,” said Richard M. Bergenstal, M.D., President, Medicine & Science, American Diabetes Association in a news release.
