61st annual Wilmington Regional Safety and Health School is back

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Established in 1950, the Wilmington Regional Health and Safety School is a non-profit organization committed to bringing important safety and health information to the public. 

This year the 61st annual Wilmington Regional Safety and Health School takes place Wednesday through Friday, July 27-29 at the Best Western Coastline Inn in downtown Wilmington. This is a great opportunity for employers and employees in many industries to learn about safety and health in the workplace. 

Attendees will receive10 hours of MESH credit. The Wilmington Regional Health and Safety School hosts the region’s largest Safety Expo--with a mini social on Wednesday night, a Moonlight Shrimp-A-Roo Cruise on Thursday, and more speakers on Friday.

New Hanover County Community Action hosts Men’s Health Fair

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Every June communities throughout the United States and the world celebrate Men’s Health Month with screenings, health fairs and other health education and outreach activities. This June, New Hanover County Community Action, Inc.’s fatherhood initiative, Fathers United Towards the Understanding of Responsibility and Education (FUTURE), will host a Men’s Health Fair.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 New Hanover County Community Action’s John H. McCoy Auditorium, located on 507 North 6th Street, will be transformed into a hub of information on men’s health. There will be informational booths and educational materials on a variety of men’s health issues – from prostate cancer and heart disease to mental health and diabetes.

The Health Fair is free and open to the public.

Six area schools selected for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Six New Hanover County elementary schools have been selected to participate in the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2011-12 school year.

The program is a component of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation. Alderman, Mary C. Williams, Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, Snipes Academy of Arts and Design, Sunset Park and Winter Park will all participate, according to New Hanover County Schools.

Through North Carolina state allocations of nearly four million dollars, these schools will reportedly have additional resources to improve the nutrition of the foods they serve.

“The program is highly successful in introducing school children to a variety of produce they otherwise might not have the opportunity to try," said USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Service Kevin Concannon, in a press release.

Water safety program for young children, families is Wednesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Start Safe: A water safety program for young children and their families will be held Wednesday, June 1 at the Fit For Fun Center, located at 302 S. 10th Street. The Wilmington Fire Department and Fit For Fun Center will host the event.

It starts at 9:30 a.m. and is only $4 per person.

Donate blood and get several freebies

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Even though Memorial Day is a holiday, the need for donated blood isn't taking a break.

The Carolinas Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross is asking for Wilmington residents to donate blood on the following days and times:

  • Friday, May 27 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 29 from noon until 4 p.m.
  • Monday, May 30 from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

You can donate blood by going to the Wilmington Donor Center, located at 1102 S. 16th Street. Donors will receive several thank yous for participating, including an American Red Cross can cooler, collapsible frisbee, free Chick-fil-A sandwich coupon, Sea Dawg tickets, a Cold Stone Creamery coupon and be entered to win one of two pairs of roundtrip Delta Air Line tickets.

Blood can safely be donated every 56 days for most healthy people over the age of 17 and who weigh at least 110 pounds.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — A community blood drive will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Wilmington on Tuesday, May 31 from 2-6 p.m.

All donors are automatically entered in a drawing to win a pair of Delta roundtrip air line tickets.

The blood drive will be held in the Cameron Center, located at 125 S. Third Street.

NHCS students offered free athletic screening exams

NHCS students offered free athletic screening exams

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — New Hanover County Schools' athletes and cheerleaders can get free athletic screening examinations by physicians in the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, in conjunction with the New Hanover County Health Department.

All students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading during the 2011-12 school year must undergo a state-mandated screening examination. Boys' exams will be held on Thursday, June 9.

Students should report to the NHC Health Department, located at 2020 S. 17th Street, at the following times:

  • 6 p.m. for Hoggard, Roland-Grise, Myrtle Grove, New Hanover, Virgo, Holly Shelter and Williston schools
  • 6:45 p.m. for Murray, Ashley, Trask, Laney, Noble and all private schools

Rising ninth graders should list the high school that they will attend in the fall. Prior to the exam, students must have their medical history, emergency information and parental permission forms completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Students may also receive a free Tdap vaccination during their exam if requested by a parent or guardian.
