Civil rights documentary to air in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A civil rights documentary is showing in Wilmington for one night only.

Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith, who works in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at UNCW, is helping host a screening of Free Angela and All Political Prisoners at Carmike Cinemas.

It's about Angela Davis, a University of California philosophy professor, who became a civil rights activist icon in the late 1960's.

The movie starts at 7:00p.m. on Thursday, May 16, and there will be a discussion on civil rights afterwards.

The Wilmington Community is invited to the hybrid performance SPIN

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington community and surrounding areas are invited to see the inspiring story of Annie Londonderry who was the first woman to travel around the world on a bicycle.

According to a press release, UNCW Presents and Thalian Hall have made it possible to see a hybrid consisitng of theatre, spoken word poetry, and part documentary performance on the Thalian Hall Main Stage. 

The hybrid is called Evalyn Parry's Spin, Starring the Bicycle. 

In the performance, Parry introduces the idea of how the bicycle created a social change in the 19th century. The bicycle will be used for the whole performance with many roles as the prop for storytelling and as a physical musical instrument. 

According to a press release, Spin,  was nominated for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award, and the Toronto Star says "Whatever, it is, it's brilliant."

The Children's Museum receives money to make upgrades to Cowan House

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Residents of Old Wilmington, Inc. has given the Children’s Museum of Wilmington a grant to improve the Cowan House.

The house is one of three historic buildings that now houses The Children’s Museum.

According to a press release from the museum, Residents of Old Wilmington granted $2,385 to have new storm windows installed in the Cowan House, which is now the make-merry room inside the museum where many children visit to celebrate their birthday.

The 19th century Cowan House is believed to have been constructed by Jane Cowan, the second wife of Governor Edward B. Dudley in 1840 and remained in the Cowan family until 1871.

New blog tells story of living on the Battleship NC

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Battleship North Carolina announced Thursday the launch of a new blog, Sea Stories.

According to battleship employees, more than 2,300 men were aboard the vessel at one point during World War II. Sea Stories allows some of those members to tell their stories to bring a better understanding of what it was like to live on a City at Sea.

"Visitors continue to tell us how much they love reading the stories of the crew members while touring the Ship,” said Heather Loftin, Promotions Director of the Battleship in a press release.  “To extend their experience and to keep our sailors stories alive, the blog is essential to share their voice.”

The first blog entry, Home Away From Home, is told by Paul Wieser, Boatswain’s Mate 1/c.

Fellowship alliance sponsors MLK march and program

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The nation will honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. today - the same day as it celebrates the inauguration of the first black president to his second term.

The Chadbourn Christian Fellowship Alliance sponsored an event Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The march began at 9:00 at the Zion Wall Freewill Baptist Church in Chadbourn. The program started immediately after the march.

The church was packed with town officials and residents celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Children reenacted events leading up to King's death.

Gwendolyn Smith, of Mt. Nebo Mssionary Baptist Church in Wilmington, was the program's guest speaker.

Wilmington holds Pearl Harbor commemoration

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack on Oahu, Hawaii, which sent the United States into WWII, was held at 1:25 p.m., in Battleship Park Friday.

World War II B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot Robert C. Newman, Jr., was the keynote speaker at the commemoration event.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –  “December 7th, 1941, a day that will live in infamy.” Friday marks the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Azalea Coast Amateur Radio Club will host a worldwide ham radio operator event onboard the battleship, commemorating the attack.

Two ceremonies are scheduled to honor the historic event. The first is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6th at 7:00 p.m. The second is scheduled for noon on Friday, Dec. 7th.

Radio operators making contact will receive a special postcard verifying contact.
