Wilmington woman hopes to raise $20,000 for medical expenses tied to kidney transplant
News

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Anyone
hoping to lower their taxes has until Saturday to make a tax deductible
donation to a charity, and one woman is hoping that some donors will also keep her in mind.

WECT has been following
Amy Moore's story for more than a year, and some may remember that the folks
behind "One Tree Hill" helped out with a fundraiser for her earlier this year.

Moore is in need of a kidney transplant. She already
has a living donor, and the surgery will likely happen this year.

When she was 16, she was diagnosed with Goodpasture
syndrome, a condition that attacks the organs.

Amy had one kidney transplant 11 years ago, but
donor kidneys only last around a decade.

Insurance will cover the
bulk of the costly procedure, but Amy is trying to raise $20,000 to help pay
for everything that insurance won't cover, like medications, hospital visits
and expenses.

Moore says she is looking
forward to the transplant and says she does her best to treat her body right,
given her condition.

"I try to take care of my kidney as much as I can," said Moore. "It would be nice to be able to know that I have that
money available so I'm not stressing so much."

Moore is currently about half
way to reaching her goal. She wants to make sure she has enough money to pay
for living expenses for both herself and her donor, as both will likely have to
be out of work for three months due to the surgery.

Moore resides in Wilmington
and works at the state port.
