BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - This week on WECT's Carolina in the Morning, viewers are daring reporter Claire Hosmann to try some rather unusual things.
The requests for dares went out earlier this month on the station's Facebook page.
The first dare to happen was beaver trapping. Viewer Jefferson Weaver submitted the challenge, so Hosmann went to join him one morning in Kelly, Bladen County.
Once there, she learned where to lay traps, what kinds of scents are used to entice the animals, and why many people find it necessary to do.
Weaver says the beavers are a pest to farmers, because they can cause the land to overfill with water. Coyotes are also dangerous because they will eat livestock and even go after domestic animals such as cats and dogs.
Tuesday, Hosmann was dared to teach a class of students attending North Brunswick High School. The students learned how to report on breaking news situations and how to think and speak on the fly.
On Wednesday, several viewers dared Hosmann to hold a snake. For this adventure, WECT went to the Cape Fear Serpentarium, which has been in Wilmington since 2002.
They have some of the rarest species of snakes, crocodiles and lizards from all over the world. They also have the most poisonous snakes, including Bush Masters, King Cobras, Vipers and Black Mambas.
Species from 39 different countries are represented and the serpentarium is also a breeding center for some of the rarest snakes in the world. Volunteer Scott Mckenzie says the serpentarium is truly one of its kind.
"Some of the snakes here they are so venomous and or so rare they are not on exhibit anywhere else in the world and this is the only place people will be able to see them, so we are very proud of that."
On Thursday, Hosmann's dare took her to downtown Wilmington. There she interviewed several unsuspecting students. She told them fake scenarios, for example, that there would be a strict dress code enforced for all students next year. Another one was that all students would be required to take advanced Calculus.
Hosmann and her crew applied makeup to their faces and fixed their hair while they replied.
On Friday, viewers dared Hosmann to be part of a flash mob. To pull if off, dancers from BFAB dance studio choreographed a routine.
Then the group taught it to Hosmann before they performed it live at the Mayfaire Town Center.
The mob was a success!
