NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A special ceremony was held Friday to honor the lives of law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.
The Wilmington Police Department hosted the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at the police department on Bess Street at 10 a.m.
Area law enforcement agencies came together to recognize the 173 officers who died on the job in the last year.
Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said the last twelve months were different because more officers were killed by gunfire. He said more usually die in car accidents.
As part of the ceremony, several names were read and two new portraits of local officers who died were unveiled.
The local ceremony precedes the national ceremony, held in Washington, DC on Sunday.
