WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Students
at Cape Fear Community College showed off their hard for Saturday afternoon.
Saturday marked the 13th year for the college's boat show.
But, college students
weren't the only ones showing off their masterpieces.
Gerald Hurst spent the
past four years building a boat and he just finished it last month.
"I became somewhat demented
and decided to build a boat," he said.
He's not the first person
you'd expect to build a boat.
"My career was in
the Air Force as a fighter pilot and they didn't teach me much about building
boats doing that," he said.
He said he worked a lot
of odd jobs and had the skills to make such a huge project a reality.
"Fortunately when I
grew up, I was exposed to different disciplines, carpentry so I had a pretty
basic knowledge of how to do things."
His boat, Legend Has It,
is based on an Italian design from the 1920s and 1930s. The boat features mahogany,
marine plywood, Douglas-fir.
"When I was growing
up I would see these boats, but the budget would never cover them," he said. "So
I decided to build one."
He spent a lot of time in
his garage building it and he said he even had to add on to his garage so the
boat could fit in there.
