WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dangerous heat continues across southeast North Carolina this Friday afternoon. As of 1:00 PM Wilmington's temperature hit 100 tying the yearly record set in 1936. When you factor in very high humidity levels the heat index hit a sizzling 115!!! Heat advisories are in effect until 7:00 PM tonight.
Wilmington has now seen its fifth 100 degree plus day in July (a record). We've also seen the seventh 100 degree plus day this year tying the record set just last year.
The heat will ease this weekend with approach of a cool front. This front will bring scattered thunderstorms to the area late tonight through the weekend. Temperatures will return to more normal July levels next week, meaning it will be hot but not excessively hot.
