Commissioner looks for support in community from local fathers

A local commissioner is looking for fathers in our school system to help serve as role models for all students.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Some local leaders are asking for fathers to step up to the plate for a national initiative in our county's school system.

New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield wants dads to have bigger roles in our children's education.

Barfield spoke with school officials and principals on Thursday regarding a group called "Watch Dogs." Barfield said it stands for dads of great students.

It's a national push to have men serve as role models for their own kids and for others in the school systems who do not have a father.

"When you look at the trend in our community we need dads to step up and be more involved in their students lives and the school systems so the young men and women who don't have a father at home have a role model," said Barfield.

Barfield is currently spreading the message to schools, principals and officials in hopes of getting a more organized group in New Hanover County.
