WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Crossing the street in Wilmington can be dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers. When you're driving, you have many distractions, the cars around you, the changing traffic lights, even your cell phone. The Wilmington Police Department wants everyone to remember that not everyone drives. Some actually walk.
"I've almost been hit by a car at least four times and I've actually been struck by a car once at this intersection on Medical Center Dr.," said Patrick Lockamy.
Lockamy is legally blind and he uses the intersection on 17th Street and Medical Center Dr. to get to work.
Officers from WPD were posted at 4 locations. The main ones were 3rd St./Ann St and 17th St./Medical Center Dr.
Officers gave out warnings to vehicles who did not yield to pedestrians and warnings to pedestrians who did not follow the signs on the crosswalk.
"Crosswalk is controlled with a light, hand signals," said Cpl. Richard Knopf with the Wilmington Police Department. "You have to treat it like you do a stop-light. As a pedestrian, you have to wait until it tells you you can go."
Everyone who crossed at the wrong time said they actually were unaware of the law.
"There is not a lot of leeway when your taking somebody's life, somebody's safety," said Cpl. Knopf. "You're taking someone's family member and putting them at jeopardy."
The initiative is to raise awareness because it's not just about convenience, it's a matter of life and death.
"Take two more seconds out of your travel day to save my life," said Lockamy.
Officers were at the locations during morning rush hour and lunch on Tuesday.
At 17th St/Medical Center Dr., 7 warnings were given to pedestrians, 4 warnings to vehicles, 1 citation, & 1 other.
At 3rd St./Ann St., 12 warnings to vehicles, 2 citations, 4 speeding tickets, & 2 others.
Officers say the numbers would be higher if they could have gotten to everyone. Many broke the law while others were being cited. WPD will be at these locations till October 26, 2012.
