WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - City Stage is performing an award-winning musical for the first time in Wilmington.
It's set in the early 1900's and follows the stories of several African-American women as they deal with life's struggles, including abusive husbands and lost family members.
"Everybody has an opportunity to see the good and the bad in every single one of the characters and how the characters develop into having some sort of loving relationship either with themselves or with someone else through the adversity that they are faced with in their lives," said actress Kim Pacheco.
The cast says the musical takes the story a step farther than the movie.
"It takes the journey that the movie kind of ended, so it delves a little bit more into the why's of the character," said Pacheco. "It allows you to kind of see the inside story. It lets you read between the lines. It makes you create your own storyline, and it captures you that way. It is such a beautiful piece of work that it deserves to be celebrated. I just can't imagine people not seeing it."
